What is oral submucous fibrosis

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a premalignant disorder associated with the chewing of areca nut (betel nut). The habit is widespread in Asian populations but is nowadays also recognized in North America and Europe. The combination of are canut and tobacco has resulted in a marked increase in OSF frequency. Blanching and stiffness of oral mucosa, trismus, burning sensation, loss of tongue mobility, and loss of gustatory sensation are characteristic of the disease.

Definition of Oral Submucous Fibrosis – OSMF is a chronic disease observed in persons who chew betel (Areca catechu) nuts, gutkha or pan masala – and is defined by tightening of the buccal, and sometimes palatal and lingual mucosae, causing trismus.

Oral Submucous Fibrosis Symptoms

In the beginning phase of the disease, the mucosa feels leathery with palpable fibrotic bands. In the advanced stage, the oral mucosa loses its resiliency and grows blanched and hard. The disease is believed to begin in the back part of the oral cavity and slowly spread outward.

Other OSMF symptoms include:

  • Pain in the ear or deafness
  • Repeated ulceration
  • Xerostomia
  • Dryness of the mouth
  • Burning sensation (stomatopyrosis)
  • Limited mouth opening
  • The nasal tone of the voice
  • Restriction of the movement of the soft palate

Causes of Oral Submucous Fibrosis:

Advance stage: Severe trismus, thickened faucial pillars, shrunken uvula, a circular band around lip and mouth, restricted tongue movement. Mouth opening <10mm

Oral Submucous Fibrosis Treatment:

Patients should be informed about the disease and its possible malignancy. Mindful counseling on de-addiction should be provided. Support by awareness and activism.

It depends on the stage if it is in the initial stage just like mouth ulcers, raised papillae, etc. It can be cured by home remedies too.

Some oral submucous fibrosis home treatment – Intake of red tomatoes, green leafy vegetables, and fresh fruit should be included in the daily diet. Green tea works well for this disease. You can chew a few tulsi leaves with a pinch of turmeric every day.
